Gerald E. Sorber

Gerald E. “Jerry” Sorber, of Hunlock Creek, passed away on August 10, 2026, at his family home.

Born in Hunlock Creek on January 12, 1933, he was the son of the late William H. and Grace Cragle Sorber. Jerry was a graduate of Shickshinny High School and went on to dedicate more than 20 years of his life to serving his country as a highly decorated United States Air Force veteran. He was the recipient of the Air Force Longevity Service Award with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Air and Space Outstanding Service Medal; Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross; Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, just to mention a few. During his military career, he proudly served as an airborne radio operator and attained the rank of Technical Sergeant. His service to his country was a source of tremendous pride throughout his life. Jerry’s dedication to serving others did not end with his military career. He continued his commitment to veterans by volunteering at the VA Hospital, where he became a familiar and well-known face to many. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 495 in Shickshinny and the VFW Post 8317 in Benton.

A lifelong outdoorsman and racing enthusiast, Jerry enjoyed car racing and was a co-owner of a race car. He also enjoyed hunting and taking fishing trips with family and friends to various lakes. At home, he took pleasure in feeding the deer that visited his farm and carpentry work.

He is survived by his brother, Neal D. Sorber of Harding; nieces and nephews, Sylvia Major, John Gibbons, Beverly Hines, Robert Gibbons, and Richard Gibbons; his goddaughter, Dawne Hines; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his siblings, Dortha Gibbons, Doyle Sorber, and Guida Thomas.

Funeral service will be conducted on Monday, August 17, 2026 at 6:00 pm from the Piatt Funeral and Cremation, 6 Sunset Lake Rd, Hunlock Creek. Interment will be on Tuesday at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville at 9:30 am.

Friends are invited to join the family from 4:00 pm on Monday until time of service.
